Portrait Photography
Professional studio portraits designed to capture character and presence through precise lighting and technical expertise in our Edmonton studio.
Book a SessionA portrait is more than a simple record of appearance; it is a technical composition of light, shadow, and expression. At Rhetoricbyte, we approach portraiture as a collaboration between the photographer and the subject, ensuring that the final image aligns with the intended purpose, whether for professional branding, personal archives, or artistic exploration.
Our studio in Downtown Edmonton is equipped with Profoto lighting systems and a professional white cyclorama, providing a controlled environment where we can manipulate light to suit different facial structures and moods. By focusing on the fundamentals of composition and anatomy, we create images that remain timeless and functional for various media formats.
The Session Process
Consultation
We begin with a detailed discussion regarding the purpose of the portraits, the desired mood, and the technical requirements for the final files. This stage ensures we select the correct lighting scheme and background.
The Shoot
During the session, we guide you through a series of poses and expressions. We use a combination of impulse and continuous lighting to achieve the depth and clarity required for high-end portraiture.
Selection
Following the shoot, you receive an online gallery of unedited proofs. You select the frames that best represent the goal of the session for further professional processing.
Post-Production
Our retouching team performs color correction and skin refinement on the selected images. The final high-resolution files are then delivered via a secure digital link.
Who is this service for?
Portrait photography at Rhetoricbyte serves a diverse range of clients who require a high standard of visual representation. Professionals such as lawyers, executives, and consultants often utilize our services to create a reliable image for LinkedIn or corporate websites. Actors and models use our studio to update their portfolios with clean, neutral headshots that highlight their features without distraction.
Additionally, we work with individuals seeking high-quality personal portraits for family archives or commemorative purposes. Regardless of the client's experience in front of the camera, our process is structured to minimize tension and maximize the technical quality of the result.
How the work is conducted
Every session is conducted in our 120 m² studio, which allows for sufficient distance between the subject and the background to create a natural bokeh or a clean, flat white look. We utilize a professional white cyclorama wall and a ceiling height of 4.5 m, enabling us to place large modifiers and overhead lights for complex lighting setups.
The photographer manages the technical aspects—exposure, focal length, and light intensity—while providing clear, verbal directions on posture and angle. We monitor the results in real-time to make immediate adjustments to the lighting or the subject's position, ensuring that the technical goals are met during the shoot itself.
What to prepare before the session
Preparation is key to a successful portrait session. We recommend choosing clothing that is timeless and avoids distracting patterns or overly bright neon colors, which can cause color casts on the skin. Solid, neutral tones generally work best for professional and artistic portraits. We suggest bringing two to three outfit options to provide variety in the final gallery.
For more detailed advice, we invite you to read our guide: How to Prepare for Your Portrait. Proper grooming and a well-rested appearance significantly reduce the time required for post-production retouching, although our team can handle most minor corrections during the editing phase.
What you receive upon completion
The final delivery consists of professionally processed images delivered in high-resolution JPEG format. These are suitable for large-scale printing and professional publication. Additionally, we provide optimized versions of the selected images for social media and web use to ensure fast loading times without sacrificing visual quality.
Clients receive access to a private online gallery for a period of 6 months, where they can download their files. As per our studio policy, the final package includes a specific number of retouched images; any additional retouching can be requested for an extra fee. Please note that RAW files are not provided as part of the standard package but can be discussed under separate contractual terms.
Timelines and Delivery
Our studio operates with a structured delivery schedule to maintain quality. Following the session, the proofing gallery is typically available within 3 business days. Once the client has made their final selection of images for retouching, the final processed files are delivered within 10 business days.
We understand the urgency of some professional projects, but this timeframe allows our head of retouching to ensure every image meets our technical standards for color balance, skin texture, and composition. All delivery dates are calculated in business days, excluding weekends and public holidays in Alberta.
What is not included
To maintain transparency, we specify that certain services are not part of the standard portrait package. Makeup artistry and professional hair styling are not provided in-house; clients are expected to arrive camera-ready or arrange their own stylists. While we have a private dressing room available for outfit changes, we do not provide wardrobe rental.
Additionally, the standard fee does not include physical prints or the creation of composite images involving complex background replacements. Any requests for extensive digital manipulation beyond standard beauty retouching will be quoted separately based on the complexity of the work.
